Cinematic Portrait Photography in Berlin U-Bahn | Anastasiia Kalinkina
“

Such a beautiful and cinematic series. Love the colors, the atmosphere, and that quiet sense of solitude running through the images.

Xuanjia

I worked with Xuanjia for this portrait session in the Berlin U-Bahn. The shoot was built around the atmosphere of the underground, using artificial light and the character of the space to create a cinematic series. The colour palette and movement became an important part of the photographs. We kept the styling simple and focused on natural movement and the interaction with the surroundings.

A Cinematic Portrait Session in Berlin

The U-Bahn gave us a strong visual setting for the shoot. The warm artificial light, dark areas and moving trains created a distinctive atmosphere throughout the session.

I worked with different compositions and shutter speeds to capture sharp portraits with movement in the background. This helped bring more energy into the series while keeping the focus on the subject.

The environment also gave us many different frames within a relatively small area. We used the platforms, trains, entrances and surrounding spaces to create variation throughout the session.

Portraits in the Berlin U-Bahn

The portraits were kept relaxed and natural, with simple movements and minimal posing. Attention was placed on expression and the way Xuanjia interacted with the space. The underground environment became an important part of the series. Reflections in the windows and passing trains added texture to the photographs and created a consistent visual mood throughout the shoot.Berlin has many locations that work well for editorial and cinematic portrait photography. The U-Bahn, streets, industrial buildings, modern architecture and quiet neighbourhoods can all create very different moods for a portrait session. I enjoy planning shoots around the character of a location and creating a visual direction that fits the person being photographed.
