This portrait session took place in the underpass of Berlin’s Zentraler Omnibusbahnhof (ZOB), using the distinctive architecture and gritty atmosphere of the space as an integral part of the visual concept.
The 1970s modernist geometry, red tiled walls, repetitive forms and dramatic artificial lighting created a strong architectural setting for the portraits. Rather than treating the location as a backdrop, I worked with its structure, symmetry and depth to place the subject within the space and make the architecture an active part of the composition.
An Architectural Portrait Session
The underpass offered a distinctive architectural environment defined by strong symmetry, long perspectives, repetitive forms and contrasting areas of light and shadow.
I used the geometry of the space to create compositions that placed the subject within the architecture. Wide frames emphasised the scale of the underpass, while closer portraits created a contrast between the monumental surroundings and the intimacy of the subject.
The existing artificial lighting became an important part of the visual language of the series. The combination of warm lights, deep shadows and reflective surfaces added depth and helped emphasise the atmosphere of the space.
Portraits in Architectural Context
The relationship between the subject and the architecture was central to the visual direction of this series.
The posing was kept simple and natural, allowing movement and expression to work together with the strong geometry of the location. The symmetry of the passage, repeating lights and converging lines were used to frame the subject and create a sense of depth.
The red tiled walls and graffiti-covered surfaces added texture and contrast to the more structured elements of the architecture. Together, these details created a visual balance between the person and the raw urban environment.
Architectural Portrait Photography in Berlin
Berlin offers a wide range of architectural environments for portrait photography, from underground passages and industrial structures to modern buildings and urban interiors.
I’m particularly interested in creating portraits where the architecture is an active part of the image rather than simply a background. The character, geometry and lighting of each location can shape the mood of the photographs and influence the way the subject is portrayed.
